Bitten By The Art Bug

Greetings and Salutations,

I can remember the first time I was bitten by the art bug. My third-grade class went outside to draw for art day. It was a beautiful afternoon, and I suspect the teachers wanted to be outside as much as the students did. I remember drawing the leaves on a branch of a nearby tree and the feeling that I could see everything clearly and was drawing what I saw. I barely looked at the paper, believing my pencil captured all the details that I was seeing. I was so deeply in the moment that when it was time to go back in, I remember being shocked back into my surroundings and everyone else moving around me. It is one of the most vivid memories of my life.

Years later, after bouncing from job to job, taking art classes and painting in my spare time, I was 30 years old when I decided I was going to whole-heartedly follow my dream to be an artist. I immediately applied for the next semester of college to focus entirely on art. I think every artist starts with a dream and at a very specific moment says this is how I’m going to spend the rest of my time here.

I am fortunate to have created hundreds upon hundreds of paintings and drawings (the good, the bad, and the ugly) as evidence of my time so far. My even better fortune is to share my work with friends, family and strangers (that are now friends) who love my work. So much so that they purchase pieces from me, show up at festivals and exhibitions just to say hi and see what I am working on now. I feel, deeply, that my work is a bridge between myself and others, connecting us. I have met some of the most wonderful people through my work. People that I might never have if I had not followed my dream and decided now was the time to start.

I truly believe this was a calling. It wasn’t always easy; sometimes it was downright hard and even scary. It was easy to question if I was doing the right thing or on the right path. Was that even a good decision? My faith and belief in what I was doing helped; even more so was my husband’s belief in me. For that, I am truly blessed.

Take care and have a beautiful day,

Karen
