After The Flood

Greetings and Salutations,
I’m on the third day of cleaning up my studio. It suffered a pipe burst and many years of neglect while I was away, taking care of my father. The damage was minimal, thankfully. The biggest loss was the reference photos I’ve accumulated over the years. I’m amazed at all the things I’ve collected that I thought would come in handy at a future date, that never did. My husband and I filled two heavy trash bags with the damaged paper and other unnecessary items. The room already feels more open and filled with light. I’m to the point where I need to organize my materials and put them away. I had a temporary studio at my parents' house and then a corner in my ‘plant’ room, so I am looking forward to having all my brushes, supports, and paint in one location again. As I go through boxes and totes, each brush, every tube of paint, and old sketchbooks feel like I’m meeting up with old friends again. “I remember you,” a thought I repeat over and over. Soon, everything will be in its home, within easy reach. Compared to the spaces I was working in before, I’ll be able to spread out and tackle larger paintings as I’m called to them. Since the door to my life with my dad has closed, I’m looking forward to the new: new adventures, new paintings, new opportunities, and a new, yet still relatively old, me. I’m looking forward to it all.

Take care and have a beautiful day,
Karen
