Some landscapes reveal themselves immediately. Others ask us to slow down and look a little longer.
This week's painting, Looking Beyond, began with sketches made near Standley Lake Reservoir. Back in the studio, I found myself less interested in recreating the exact view and more interested in the experience of looking through the landscape.
The trees moved closer to the foreground. The hillside grew larger. Colors shifted toward deep plums, blue-violets, muted golds, and yellow-greens. As the painting developed, layers of space became the focus. Rather than presenting the entire scene at once, the composition encourages the eye to move through the trees before discovering the water and hillside beyond.
Many of my Front Range paintings begin with a specific location, but they often evolve into something shaped by observation, memory, and design. Looking Beyond is one of those paintings.
