This week's painting, Still Here, began with an ash tree near my home and an evening sky filled with soft pinks, purples, and creams.
The contrast between the dark silhouette of the tree and the luminous clouds behind it caught my attention. But the painting is really about something deeper than a sunset.
After spending years away, I had recently returned home and was finding my way back into familiar surroundings. During that time, I began noticing things I had overlooked before, the changing light, the nearby foothills, and ordinary landmarks that suddenly felt significant.
This ash tree became one of those landmarks.
Still Here reflects the experience of seeing something familiar with fresh eyes and discovering that the places closest to us can still surprise us.
